The relevance of the work is due to the interest in the problem of language variation. In modern linguistic literature, the prevailing opinion is that Quebec French has its own norm, which makes it possible to identify the features of its functioning at different levels of the language system. The article offers the results of a comparative study of the interrogative statements’ melody, conducted on the material of the standard French language and the French language variant common in Canadian Quebec. In theoretical literature, an opinion has been repeatedly expressed about the monotonous nature of intonation in the Quebec version of the French language. The aim of the work was to test this hypothesis using experimental phonetic research methods. The object of our study was the melody of special interrogative sentences with inversion. We studied the perception patterns of intonation characteristics of special questions during a specially organized perceptual experiment. The results obtained indicate a greater expressiveness of the speech of Quebec French speakers, which may be associated with the expansion range of melodic changes compared to the standard version of the French language. Perceptual evaluation of the Quebec speakers’ utterances revealed additional expressive shades that are attributed to interrogative sentences. The participants in the experiment rated interrogative statements as having additional “emotional significance” of surprise, interest and anxiety.
