English pronunciation poses a serious problem to Chinese learners. The purpose of this article is to investigate the difficulties encountered by PRC students in their production of English word-initial consonant clusters. It overviews different theoretical approaches to second and foreign language acquisition, presents and analyzes the results of the experimental study on the acquisition of consonant sequences by Chinese students, and suggests methodological recommendations for teaching English pronunciation.
