The author aims to examine the self-portraits of James Ensor, the leading representative of the Belgian avant-garde of the turn of the 19th and the early 20th centuries, as a marker of complex social relationships between the artists and his relatives, colleagues and friends. Leaving aside the usual stylistic approach to the analysis of the evolution of the Ensor's art, the author focuses on the study of iconographic and thematic features of the rich gallery of self-portraits, to the creation of which Ensor addressed throughout his creative life.
