The article is devoted to French borrowings in Swedish. It examines the history of French words incorporation into the Swedish language and their place in the modern vocabulary. The main inflow of French borrowings was observed into the Swedish language in the XVII - XVIII centuries, which was explained by both historical events and fashion for French culture. The French influence reached its culmination during the reign of king Gustav III (1771-1792), and later began to weaken gradually. Depending on the chosen approach, the Swedish vocabulary comprises from 1 to 6% of French borrowings. The article highlights the most important semantic groups of French borrowings, with the group of food and drinks names being replenished mainly today. However, many French words have already become so firmly established in the Swedish language that they are not recognized as borrowings by native speakers. Due to the efforts of Swedish linguists of the eighteenth century the spelling of the French vocabulary was largely modified with a view to its better adaptation to the ranks of the Swedish language, however, borrowings of recent decades, particularly in the areas of cooking, tend to retain the French spelling.
