We extend the classical Itô formula for a $C^2$ smooth function $F$ of the Wiener process to the case when $F^{\prime}\in L_{2,loc}(R)$. We show that in this general case the Itô correction term has a classical form if $F^{\prime\prime}$ is treated in the sense of generalized function theory (in a distributional sense).
