The paper demonstrates the systemic nature of the plural form passersby in modern English. The data obtained from contextual analysis makes it possible to characterize the units such as passerby as formations undergoing a morphological transformation from a phrase to a compound noun. Revealed is the initial syntactical pattern for such phrases and its relevance for more insights into the nature of phrasal verbs and the syntactical potential of adverbs in modern English.
