The paper shows that the procedure of radical doubt, undertaken by Descartes, although having no methodology, is nevertheless required for a relevant reading of “Meditation on the First Philosophy”. An attempt has been made to find out what actions of the mind should be performed to make “not so much a theory to be understood as an exercise to be practiced” of Cartesians construct. Since the text of Descartes is addressed to all scholars, and contains a requirement to commit an act of radical doubt, it is investigated, with what particular subject the transformations, required by Descartes, can occur. An analogy is drawn between how readers of Augustine's “Confession” are involved in confessional work, on the one hand, and readers of “Meditation”, on the other hand. It is noted that in both cases, without peering the community of the goals (confession in one case and the new science in the second one) cannot be achieved. However, if it is important for Augustine to correlate himself with the community in each act of awareness of the mental work carried out in the text, then in “Meditations” such correlation is hidden on the first pages and not reproduced in the future. His reader needs to accept certain, protocogital desires and positions.
