The article explorers retablos made by J.B. Churriguera in the late XVII — first decade of the XVIII th centuries. Master combines the emphasis on the decorative elements with complex religious programme. J.B. Churriguera follows the decrees of the Council of Trent. Spanish sculptor relies on works of masters, who belong mainly to the first half of the XVII th century, for example Pedro de la Torre. Creatively reinterpreting methods of his predecessors, J.B. Churriguera becomes the founder of a new style and, in turn, influences a number of masters, among whom is Pedro de Ribera. The author comes to the conclusion that the activity of J.B. Churriguera in this period represents the culmination of the development of the Baroque style in Spanish art.
