N2 - Environmental assessments of the areas exposed to the pollution from the Severonikel Mining and Mineral Processing Operation have been carried out by the Department of Geoecology and Environmental Management at SPbU since 2001. In 2018, seven geoecological profiles were collected. The study area is located 50 km south of the industrial site . In total, 50 soil samples and 10 bark samples of Pinus sylvestris L. were collected. The total heavy metal content in the soil and the bark was determined by ICP-OES. Stationary moss ( Sphagnum palustre L.) and lichen ( Cladonia sp.) traps were set up for three months. The highest Ni (4840 mg/kg) and Cu (3090 mg/kg) levels were recorded at a distance of 12 km, the lowest Ni (34 mg/kg) and Cu (10 mg/kg) levels were observed in the town of Kirovsk. In the Lapland Nature Reserve, the Ni level in the topsoil was 436 mg/kg, Cu level was 190 mg/kg. Throughout most of the study area, the topsoils had dangerous pollution levels based on the total soil pollution coefficient (Zc). In traps, the maximum accumulation of Ni and Cu was observed at a distanceof 3 km from the pollution source - in mosses (56 and 53 mg/kg, respectively) and lichens (18and 16 mg/kg).
