During the anti-Christian repressions of the Tokugawa period (1603-1867) Japanese underground Christian believers, having been isolated from Western missionaries, created a book named "Tenchi Hajimari no Koto" ("The Beginning of Heaven and Earth"), in which Christian doctrines got mixed up with Shinto-Buddhist concepts in a strange and curious way. One of the key Christian doctrines concerning the character of Holy Trinity and interrelations of its persons also was drastically transformed. The image of the Father and the Son acquired Buddhist features, Virgin Mary was equaled to the Holy Spirit, and the apparition of the three persons became consequent in time. In the understanding of the Japanese underground Christians God appears to have lost some of His key attributes such as omniscience, and Jesus Christ was crucified not for the sake of all human beings, but for children killed by Herod. On the whole, the interpretation of the Trinity by Japanese underground Christians became easier for laymen in spiritual isolation to understand, more logical and concrete.
