The article deals with different types of context and intertext that influence production and perception of contamination lexical units. The sources of material are German and Austrian print and online media, dates of the website “Die Wortwarte” and advertising. The first part gives the information about research of contamination in German word formation. The first part describes also the main structural and functional features of contamination that are important for production and perception of these lexical units. The second part of the article presents six types of the context: direct explanation of the meaning of contamination, comparison of the meaning of contamination word and the meaning of one of its components, application of the components of contamination as free words in the text, using of the general meaning of the text, involvement of special and general knowledges of the reader, additional using of nonverbal context. By explanation of the meaning of contamination and comparison of the meaning of contamination with one of its components the main goal of the author is unambiguous understanding of contamination. By other types of the context the author depends on creativity and knowledges of the reader. The perception is most difficult if the reader has to proceed from the general context or to use the additional knowledges. Nonverbal components of the context promote better understanding of contamination especially in advertising. Intertext intensifies the playing effect of contamination and serves as additional information for understanding of the text.
