The article offers a case study of Chekhov’s short story The Spouse, and applies its results to resolving a theoretical problem: under what conditions can we speak about the meaningful presence of one text’s elements in another text, if the writer does not identify them as quoted or borrowed? The article establishes a number of «external» (relating to author’s life and literary history) and «internal» (relating to the story’s plot) criteria.
