In this paper we attempt to conduct a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the speech of several bilingual and multilingual speakers in Albanian villages located in Budjak and Priazov’ye regions. The goal is to describe the main types of contact phenomena and identify the strategies for embedding Russian words and expressions into Albanian speech among different speakers. We study the distribution of single-word and multi-word inclusions, the number of single-word inclusions related to different parts of speech, and (in the case of changeable parts of speech, such as nouns, verbs, and adjectives) also the ratio of Russian inclusions with varying degrees of adaptation in the local Albanian variety in which the conversation is conducted. Further, we discuss the issues related to the interpretation of single-word inclusions as cases of code-switching or borrowing and the dependence of variations in the use of certain Russian inclusions in the speech of different speakers on their bilingual competence and/or parameters of the situation, such as the topic of conversation, participants and their linguistic repertoire.
