The article concerns the problem of anonymous and amateur art in the People’s Republic of China during the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolu- tion. At that many Chinese artists did not sign their works by personal names as they were anxious to create something not in line with the turbulent po- litical course. The official reason of such anonymity was serving to the society and to the collectivism spirit. The exception was non-professional artists from205the working, peasant or military class, whose names were renowned all over the country. This category included artist Li Fenglan, a peasant painter from Hux- ian (Shaanxi prov.). Her most famous painting “Spring hoeing” was most likely created with the professional artists assistance, and this was quite widespread at that time.
