N2 - The article deals with the problem of correlation between inflection and derivation in the Indo-European languages (on the example of Russian, Latin, and Ancient Greek). The method of “focal” anal sis proposed b A. A. Kibrik is used, which allows taking into account both “classical”, or “focal” cases of a strict distinction between word-formation suffixes and form-building inflections, and the cases of deviation from these points (“outliers”), when suffixes show not onl derivative, but also inflective characteristics, and vice versa when inflections show word-formation potential. Thus, when appl ing the “focal anal sis” and a more differentiated approach to the various features of inflection and word formation, we obtain a much more accurate matrix of the interaction of inflection and word-formation in the languages anal zed than in the traditional “discrete” analysis. At the same time, in Russian, Latin, and Ancient Greek, the outliers do not reach the stage of “h bridit”. Structuring of inflective and derivative morphemes within the framework of the “focal” approach allows us to take a new look at a number of problems related to gender and noun classes.
