The article raises the problem of studying the symbol in medieval Western literature and culture, which differed at that time with double, and sometimes multivalued semantics, the same conventional sign could designate opposing concepts, characters or phenomena. When starting to analyze the symbol of the rose in the novel about the Rose, it is necessary to take into account that it will be a question of synthesizing certain values of one allegory, and each of these values leads the interpreter from the starting point, i. e. Pink bush in the center of the Garden of Veselia, at least on three different semantic routes: 1) courtly love; 2) religious; 3) erotic. Thus, the «rose» is associated with three central female images for medieval Christian culture: Eva, the Beautiful Lady and the Virgin ·
