There is no doubt that Learning Management Systems should be studied by Russian teaching materials developers. Previous methodological studies have provided important information on the content-developing projects and foreign languages courses which are based on the well-known online platforms, but the experience of implementation of online platforms which were designed specifically for learning foreign languages has not been described yet. That is the very reason why the goal of the research was to solve the problem of implementation of LMS and online platform which was specially designed for learning foreign languages at Russian institution. The article presents the results of the first pilot test of the learning management system during the learning process of first year students of bachelor program of the Faculty of Physics at St. Petersburg State University in 2017/2018 academic year in order to improve the effectiveness of language learning at the faculty that does not deal with linguistics and philology. The aim of the research is to find the best contemporary teaching materials which include means of e-learning in order to fill the educational programs of the English language subject in terms of
students' independent work. The article presents data that were gathered during the pilot test, discusses issues of the implementation of Learning Management Systems and describes the conditions that are necessary and sufficient for successful integration of the online platform into the foreign language
course. In the field of teaching foreign languages anything new is grasped from practical experience.
The experience of the St. Petersburg State University gained from the pilot test of the Cambridge Learning Management System Empower allows making conclusions and suggestions.
