During a long blockade, the townspeople heard the constant alternation of an alarm, the buzz of aircraft, the sounds of cannon shots whistling and the explosions of falling bombs and shells, the screams of people, the desired sounds of all-clear and finally silence, sometimes an absolute silence, which was again replaced by the howling of a siren. Leningraders did not see German planes and guns, but they heard them well. Sounds became tangible, compensating for the acute lack of information. The huge number of bombs and shells that hit the city and the townspeople in the first months of the blockade was intended to stun, arouse fear, and suppress the will to resist. The emotionality of perceiving the sounds of war was intensified by the state of mortal hunger in which the majority of Leningraders lived. The acoustic space of the сity-front was increasingly saturated with mortal danger, becoming psychologically intolerable. By the end of autumn 1941, most citizens, having become accustomed and exhausted, stopped reacting explosively emotionally to sirens and bombing. The sound environment of the city-front not only generated emotional impressions and reactions, but also formed strategies for behavior and survival in the disaster
