The article is dealing with the phraseological expressions with ethnonym components which are the main marker of ethnicity. Material of Romanic languages (Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese) is used for illustrations. Ethnonyms receive different extralinguistic connotations connected to the historical and cultural associations and containing evaluating (as usual negative and subjective) opinion on the object of speech in the existing “friend-or-foe”opposition. Phraseological ethnic stereotypes of Romanic areal countries are being observed concerning each other as well as the representatives of other nationalities. The general and the particular in the Stranger image making are being exposed. Paremiological material and macrotoponyms are used in some cases for characterization of ethnic stereotypes.
