The lack of criteria for determining the boundaries of genres is one of the fundamental problems of genre studies. A prime example is a promotional video, whose status as a separate genre of advertising discourse has not yet been fully determined due to the fact that they were considered only from the standpoint of their compositional construction. This article examines promotional videos of Russian and foreign higher education institutions in a communicative and pragmatic aspect. The classification of communication strategies and tactics is proposed.
