The article is the first to attempts to examine the most famous work of the German writer W. G. Sebald (1944-2001) “Austerlitz” (2001) in the light of the problems of the novel of education. The analysis allows us to conclude that, without being explicitly designated by the author as a novel, “Austerlitz” discovers in the method of organizing the biography of the central character Jacques Austerlitz some essential points allowing him to be perceived as (anti) hero of the upbringing or “becoming” hero in the terminology of M. M. Bakhtin.
