Acquisition of a second language sound system presents a great challenge for L2 learners. The present article investigates the acquisition of the English approximant / ɹ / by Chinese students. It analyzes pronunciation problems encountered by Chinese learners and suggests guidelines for teaching phonetic aspects of speech.
