The article provides a comparative analysis of extracts from the German
agricultural manual Stratagema Oeconomicum (1645), compiled by
S. Gubert, and its translation into Russian by M. V. Lomonosov —
Liflyandskaya Ekonomiya (“Livonian Economy”, 1747). Cases of context
reduction in the translated text in comparison with the original are
described, possible reasons for these decisions are indicated. The author
of the paper analyses a fragment of Liflyandskaya Ekonomiya, in which
Lomonosov left a gap instead of a three-component Latin phrase from the
original German text. In the course of the analysis, the author determines
a denotatum that corresponds to the phrase from the German text,
indicates its modern name, finds synonymous words and phrases for it
in European 18th–21st-century reference books, and traces the evolution
of the studied object’s descriptions in different time periods.
