It was repeatedly proposed to treat the cosmological ideas of the Presocratics as
a bridge between mythology and science. Particular passages of the Iliad and the
Theogony were cited to show mythological legacy in Presocratic theories. However, there
was no such a thing as mythology within science. On the contrary, one may approach the
passages in question as echoes of proto-scientific ideas of the European Bronze Age.
Such ideas were formed within a religious system that combined two basic elements:
on the one hand, major divine powers were located in the sky; on the other hand,
they were not yet seen like human kings and queens. Accordingly, the desire to foresee
the actions of divine powers invited an inquiry into behavior of celestial bodies and
sometimes led to the results similar to those of early scientific research.
