The methodical works about rehabilitation potential of the disabled with severe multiple developmental disabilities (SMDD) do not always fit into the services that are actually provided by state institutions. The main means of supporting an individual with SMDD are psychological and pedagogical help provided by specialists in close collaboration with a person’s loved ones. A comprehensive psychological and pedagogical study of the entire group of disabled people with SMDD, identifying the most typical characteristics of each, taking into account the most consistently manifested features of physical and mental development allow specialists to develop a specific plan of their own actions, as well as the ways of cooperation with other specialists of the social institution in which a disabled person receives assistance. This is necessary for the proper organization of the correctional-developmental environment, where each element (hygiene procedures, classes) is based on the principles of developing education, and the result of which should be independent or accompanied practical activity in adult life. The study is devoted to the investigation of the problems of interaction of the families having a disabled person with SMDD in their care with social protection and health care bodies, and to the opportunities of their solution. The data received showed that families with the disabled with SMDD belong to one of the most socially vulnerable categories among families with people of special health needs. According to the study, there are no unified approaches to the organization of comprehensive support for people with SMDD. It is necessary to expand the scope of social services for this category of people in order to increase their mobility, communication, social and household adaptation, as well as training opportunities. In general, this should be aimed at overcoming household and social dependences on others and increasing the level of socialization of people with SMDD, especially it should be based on such new technologies as day stay, feasible professional training with employment, accompanied by accommodation as determining factors for social rehabilitation.
