The author analyzes the trends in the development of journalism education on a global scale and in the Russian higher schools. Comparison of data and experts' views reveals a contradiction between the tendency to unification, mainly by the Anglo-American model, and maintaining national cultural specificity. The article is aimed to identifying the basic characteristics of the national journalism education, which determine its stability in terms of international exchange and value for the world professional community. The leading role in the protection of the national original model belongs to the theoretical and pedagogical schools of journalism. They have the potentiality to effective countering excessive borrowing from foreign cultures and following historically established priorities in the professional journalists teaching.
