In the article the author, analyzing the currently existing in the methodology of teaching Russian as a foreign language basic set of terminological units, form-ing the basis of the learning system, proposes to introduce a category that combines objective and theoretical parameters (purpose, approach, method, techniques, technology, learning tools) and subjectively elected by the teacher (learning strategy, techniques). This category offers a learning style that is widely, but mostly haphazardly, used today. As an example of how the learn-ing style affects the strategy implemented within the framework of the com-municative method, E. I. Passov's system aimed at the socialization of the learner's personality through the introduction to culture is given, and an alter-native version of the strategy aimed at taking into account the cognitive style of thinking of modern students belonging to generations X, Y, Zis proposed.
