The article contains the original translation of extracts from the Leviathan by T. Hobbes, one of the founders of the classical political philosophy of Modern times. The translation is given in comparison with modern reconstructions of the text in the original language, as well as with the Russian translation of 1991. The need for a new look at the popular text is explained by the presence of numerous English-language versions of Leviathan. The tasks of the translator were to choice of the English source for translation, as close as possible to the source, and to find of semantic and stylistic analogues for the concepts of Hobbes in the Russian language. As an innovative approach to the Leviathan two specific examples are given: a) an indication of «the Theory of Authorization», which domestic commentators ignore precisely because of the imperfection of the translation; b) the revision of the meaning of the terms Common-Wealth / Civitas.
