This paper discusses the persuasion strategies found in Curieuser Affecten-Spiegel by Johann Gottfried Gregorii, alias Melissantes. After addressing the theories of persuasion and argumentation as
well as the dichotomies of convincing/urging (exhortation) and rational/emotional argumentation,
the author decides to use the term 'persuasion strategy'. Based on the analysis of the Benimmbuch
(the Chosen Code of Conduct), some of the strategies used to grab attention, to substantiate a
claim, or to create a positive or negative image are explained. These strategies are implemented
using a number of ancillary techniques which in turn are supported by various linguistic means.
