The structure of elbaite with an unusually high aluminium content of 74% in the Y positions is refined to R = 0.028. The space group is R3m; a 15.802, c 7.0861 A; Z = 3. The formula is stated to be 482(Na_0.46K_0.01Ca_0.08box _0.48)(Al_2.18Li_0.53Mn_0.22Fe³⁺ _0.02Ti_0.005) _2.98.Al_6.00B_2.96Si_6.08O₂₇- (O_1.47OH_2.44F_0.09)₄. Source of the specimen is given as 'the rare-metal pegmatite field of the NW USSR'. The relations between the geometrical characteristics of the Al- elbaite and those of related compounds are discussed. -A.P.
