The structure of elbaite with an unusually high aluminium content of 74% in the Y positions is refined to R = 0.028. The space group is R3m; a 15.802, c 7.0861 A; Z = 3. The formula is stated to be 482(Na0.46K0.01Ca0.08box 0.48)(Al2.18Li0.53Mn0.22Fe3+ 0.02Ti0.005) 2.98.Al6.00B2.96Si6.08O27- (O1.47OH2.44F0.09)4. Source of the specimen is given as 'the rare-metal pegmatite field of the NW USSR'. The relations between the geometrical characteristics of the Al- elbaite and those of related compounds are discussed. -A.P.
