The article considers the phenomenon of ecological journalism in the region of the increased ecological risk -The Arkhangelsk Region located in the Arctic zone in the Extreme North of Russia. Through a number of objective circumstances related to peculiarities of the Russian province historical development, the place of nature in the values hierarchy of the society constantly changed. The supreme power played the defining role in this process. It determined the course to "mancipating" the nature in favor of economic goods rather than its preserving and increase for future generations. Under these conditions a specific Russian mentality of the "scot-free user" and "placeholders" who had enough wood, coal, oil, water, air, fertile soils, and biological resources was formed. In this context, mass media has to play the determining role in changing from the anti-ecological to eco-focused mindset. However, its political bias and special demand of the audience for sensational and scandal news does not enable the ecological topic to get duly fixed in the news business of the day both on the federal and regional levels. In this article, the areas of the communicative interrelation between the state government and mass media, the state government and local population via mass media will be characterized. The functional purpose of ecological journalism, its basic typological features and factors of impact will be defined.
