The name of Mimnermus’ father is transmitted by the Suda in a biographical entry (μ 1077) that introduces the poet as Μίμνερμος Λιγυρτυάδου; the name of the poet’s father is preserved by no other source. Although a priori there is little reason to doubt the transmitted form, it is difficult to reconcile it with Solon’s address to Mimnermus as Λιγυᾳστάδης (Sol. fr. 20 West = Diog. Laert. 1, 61; cf. Sud. μ 1077), which manifestly is a compliment to Mimnermus but seems to make the name of Mimnermus’ father rather than the poet’s own name the object of the pun. The article examines the advantages and the disadvantages of existing approaches to this problem and proposes a different solution, arguing that the transmitted form Λιγυρτυάδης must be an adjectival patronymic, not the actual name of Mimnermus’ father.
