The Goans trickled into Africa when it had been a part of the Estado Português da India. The British perceived the “Goanese” as Portuguese and distinguished them from the Asian population. In the East African census until the 1960s the Goans were regarded as a “special race”. In the tradition of British racial segregation and the caste system model, the Goans formed a closed endogamous community, formed their own cultural institutions.President Uhuru Kenyata announced the recognition of Kenyan Indians as the 44th tribe in Kenya and invited them to participate in the political, economic, cultural and social development of the country.
