Whilst glaciation of Antarctica goes back to the Oligocene, glaciation of South America and Greenland started some 14 Mya. Massive glaciation of the Northern Hemisphere started only some 1 Mya in the late Matuyama Chron. So far, evidence of this early glaciation is largely restricted to North America. Scandinavia may have been glaciated, but most of Asia probably was still ice-free.
