The paper deals with the urgent theoretical issues of the assessment organization in foreign language teaching, particularly in teaching Russian pronunciation for foreigners. Basing on the methodological literature analysis we specified the concept of "assessment in foreign language teaching", revealed the features of various assessment types and described the assessment major functions. It was proved that creating the efficient foreign language phonetic skills assessment system is directly connected with the determination of the concrete objects of assessment.
