The international scientific conference «60th Anniversary of Teaching the Romanian Language at St Petersburg State University» was successfully held at Saint Petersburg State University on May 26, 2018. The conference brought together the diplomats of the Embassy of Romania in the Russian Federation and the Consulate General of Romania in St Petersburg, scholars and scientists from Russia and Romania: professors from St Petersburg State University, Herzen University, and Moscow universities, researchers from the Institute for Linguistic Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography (the Kunstkamera), and SPbU alumni. The present article offers an overview of the conference and highlights the history of teaching the Romanian language at St Petersburg University that dates back to 1839. As the major specialization, the Romanian language has been taught at St Petersburg State University throughout 60 years from 1957 - the year when the section of the Romanian language and literature was founded at the Department of Romance Philology. It also provides information about outstanding scholars, specialists in the Romance languages who established academic traditions of teaching and researching the Romanian language at St Petersburg University.
