Britain’s exit from the European Union is an unprecedented event in the history of European integration. The
European Union, which throughout its existence has been subject exclusively to expansion, lost one of its members for the first time. The British precedent may be the
starting point for a global trend towards a decline in the effectiveness of decision-making in general elections, as the results of the latter can be significantly influenced
by the media. The process of Britain’s withdrawal from the European Union is considered in the context of the impact of national media institutions on the conflict situation. The article describes the genesis of the development of Eurosceptic sentiments within the United Kingdom in a complex system of interaction between society,
government and the media, where all elements are characterized by varying degrees of mutual dependence.
