The paper examines one poorly studied episode of the late Soviet battles for sovereignization and self-determination that took place in Kūhistoni Badakhshon Autonomous Region of Tajikistan in December 1991. The source corpse for the study was made of documents and write-ups from the Kūhistoni Badakhshon Autonomous Region State archive n. a. Kh. Buribekov. The sufficient source foundation enabled the scholars to conclude that the project of GBAO sovereignization had no future due to ethnic and cultural antagonisms inside, discord among the “old” communist elites over declaring autonomous republic, dependency on Dushanbe and passiveness of the Pomiries in the republic administration of Tajikistan.
