The paper presents the notion of precedent name in translation and demonstrates that on a fairly large number of occasions a precedent name that a translator evokes in his/her memory or finds in a bilingual dictionary as an equivalent to a certain ST unit can create a problem and eventually lead to a translation error. The main causes of this problem are analyzed and specific examples are given. Finally, ways of solving the problem are suggested within the framework of the cognitive-heuristic model of translation.
