This article considers aspects of the evolution of exhibition practice that had led to the emergence of “big projects” of the twentieth century. Analysis of concepts of exhibitions shows that “largescale exhibition projects” of the twentieth century become holistic artistic phenomenons with a clear artistic and aesthetic concept. The evolution of Western exhibition practice since the French Salons and to exhibitions of contemporary art of the twentieth century logically led to the emergence in the 1960s and 70s of thematic exhibitions with a clear curatorial idea ·
