The leaf epidermis was studied in 15 species of the genus Gnetum. The leaves are hypostomatal. In some species, single stomata were observed over the major veins in the upper epidermis. The paracytic type of stomata dominates. Besides, the laterocytic, anamocytic and some other stomatotypes were observed. The structural diversity of the tissue is based on the same complexes of characters, as in flowering plants. It is associated with changes of the number and size of cells that compose the leaf blade epidermis, the degree of stomata development (stomatal index, density of stomata, their size), and the shape of the basic epidermal cells in the evolution course of Gnetum genus. The leaf epidermis in the members of Gnetum shows similar to flowering plants level of variability of quantitative indicators (indexes) that characterize its structure. Samples of tissues from the species under investigation differ also in ratio of differentiated and aborted stomata.
