This work is devoted to the poetic analysis of the play "The Debut of an Adventurer" (1852) in comparison with the historical works of P. Merimee of the 1820s and a brief review of its translation by M. Yasnov. The purpose of the article is to study the little-known drama Merimee. It reveals the evolution of the creative manner of the writer of the 1850s, when after joining the ranks of the French Academy, he actually refused to create short stories and began studying Russian history and literature. Its scientific novelty lies in the fact that this topic still remains outside the scope of the research interests of domestic scientists.
