The article examines the formation of a new explicative construction as in which became widely used in the English colloquial speech of the XXI century. The sentences with such construction are usually developed according to the model X as in Y. The authors identify that X and Y vary in structure and each of them can be the word, word combination or sentence. The study shows that the mentioned construction performs different communicative functions: identification, verification, commentary.
