In this paper, we represent the data accumulated so far on the role of the linker histone H1 in structural organization and functioning of chromatin. We focus on the structure and posttranslational modifications of the histone H1. Special attention is paid to the role of H1 in formation of highly compact chromatin in transcriptional inactive state with a high level of DNA compaction.
