The article deals with the analysis of the character of relations between Colombia and the USA after “the Panama incident” (when the US anxious desire to build the interoceanic channel defined the American contribution to the separation of one of the Colombian provinces). The authors made a research of elaboration of Respice Polum policy which still is one of the basic lines for the Bogota’s relations with the world. The article demonstrates the positive and negative effects of such a rapprochement for Colombia both in economic and political aspects. The author also is analyzing the evolution of the system of Colombian-American relations throughout the 1920-1930s demonstrating Colombia’s significance for the US security system. Additionally, the author focuses on the contacts between the USA and Colombia in the pre-World War II period. The article also contains conclusions on how this pattern of American-Colombian relations was modifies since the start of the “Cold War”
