The article is devoted to the discussion about the problem of the position of prisoner of war in the XIX century. In that historical period Europe witnessed large-scale discussions aimed at humanization of war including creating favourable conditions for prisoners of war. The article reviews the development of this discussion and also examines in details the position of prisoners of war given in the Hague Convention of 1899.
