This article explores certain features of the lyric poetry of Zahīr-udDīn Muhammad Babur (1483–1530) who was the prominent statesman, scholar and the talented author of the Middle East. Babur composed his works mainly in Chagatai (“Old Uzbek”) language and his poems are generally of the secular nature. However one can discover in these poems certain motives, images and special terms belonged to the Muslim mysticism (Sufism) and to the Sufi poetry which have influenced the Chagatai poetry since its origin. The elements in question are: the figure of the Beloved Friend (the True God in Sufism) and the parting with Him; the blackness of hair and the purity of heart (face); the openness of the eyes and the closeness of one’s heart; the withdrawing from the world for the sake of love to the Friend; the desert of nonexistence; the wine and the cup-bearer, etc. The analysis of Sufi elements in Bаbur’s poetry may help to study his personal worldview and the aesthetic conscience of the Middle East Muslims of this period.
