N2 - The article examines the problem of choice between science and ideology on the example of Nikolay Matorin’s group (1928 - 1935) on the study of contemporary religious cults and practices (the "living" religion). Orientalists historians, ethnographers and folklorists were part of this group. In spite of all possible differences in ideological views (or their absence), they wanted to study their subject from the standpoint of modern science, as can be seen in the analysis of the biography of Nikolay Matorin, the founder of the group.
