On the basis of the definition of the role of industrial infrastructure in the organization and development of the regional economy, the basic methodological approaches to the development of regional transport systems are considered. Analysis of the experience of the development of transport systems of the North-West Federal District and the Leningrad region leads to the conclusion about the need for the development of updated techniques for addressing sustainable spatial development of the territories.
